About David & Marty Meek...
We served in Japan with OMS International for many years—more than 27 years for Marty and fifteen years as a couple. During that time we were involved in a wide variety of ministries, including twelve years in field leadership. David preached twice monthly at an English worship service and regularly in Japanese for various churches and denominational events. David was responsible for coordinating ministry efforts with Japanese church and seminary leaders. Marty had a very active ministry in English and Western cooking evangelism and taught as a volunteer in our local elementary school as a bridge to the community. David also taught English evangelism classes in cooperation with the Seminary church. We are thankful that the Lord blessed this ministry over the years. During one of our terms we helped to plant a pioneer church in Iruma, near Tokyo. David served as a member of the Christian Academy in Japan Board of Directors and as Chair of its Board of Councilors, and Marty also served on the Board of Directors. Marty hosted many field guests and fellowship events with national church and seminary leaders and staff during our time in Japan.
We have three children—Satomi, who is now 14, Chris, who will be 14 in October, and Rebecca, 11. All of our children are Japanese and are adopted. We are thankful that the Lord has blessed us by bringing them into our family and have tried to encourage other families to consider adoption. Our children have been a real asset to our evangelistic ministry over the years.
After much prayer, we made the difficult decision to return to the States for ministry so we can be closer to David’s mother. David is an only child and his mother has developed health problems in recent years. We have been asked to assume new responsibilities at OMS headquarters in Greenwood.
David will be working in the Development Department at OMS International helping to raise funds for OMS ministries around the world, especially those related to evangelism and leadership training. He will be building partnerships with Christian foundations and individuals to support these efforts. He will also assist in preparing presentations to major donors and oversee the process of preparing direct mail letters. Marty will serve in the hospitality area at OMS Headquarters, hosting international guests, board members, and missionary staff and promoting community among staff members through regular fellowship events. We both hope to continue involvement with ministry to Japan by hosting homestay groups, leading short-term teams to the field, and reaching out to Japanese living in the Greenwood area.
OMS International—an evangelical, interdenominational faith mission originally known as the Oriental Missionary Society—reaches the nations for Christ through evangelism, theological training and church planting in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Africa. OMS then joins with these churches in global partnerships to reach the rest of the world. OMS-related ministries counted 188,303 decisions for Christ and 1,677 churches planted in 2007, with a goal of reaching 300,000 decisions and 3,000 churches planted in 2013.
